Welded Rail Clip

M120 Two-Part Welded Crane Rail Clip

The M120 is a two-part welded crane rail clip consisting of a replaceable clip top and a lower weldable forged steel base. The two components interlock, slide and tighten together to clamp the rail foot securely to the supporting structure. The base is welded to the beam or sole plate during installation.

The M120 is designed and performs as a friction connection, meaning it relies on clamping force to transfer lateral loads. It must be carefully tightened to the prescribed torque. Compared to the M71, the M120 is suited to medium to heavy crane rail profiles where higher lateral load capacity is required.

The clip top incorporates a vulcanized synthetic pressure block for rail retention and load absorption. The modular pressure block can be replaced without replacing the entire clip top assembly, reducing long-term maintenance cost.

Rail Profiles the M120 Suits

The M120 is suited to medium to heavy crane rail profiles from A65 through to A150, as well as heavy standard rail. It also suits MRS series crane rail profiles used in port and heavy industrial applications. For the heaviest applications with the highest lateral load requirements, the M165 may be more appropriate. Send us your rail profile and we'll advise.

Applications

Where the M120 is Used

The M120 suits permanent installations on medium to heavy crane rail profiles where the base can be welded to the supporting structure. It is widely used in warehouses, fabrication facilities, ports and heavy industrial environments where higher lateral loads require a more substantial welded clip than the M71.

FAQ

M120 Rail Clip: Common Questions

What is the M120 crane rail clip used for?
The M120 is a two-part welded crane rail clip for medium to heavy duty crane rail installations. It suits A65 to A150 crane rail profiles, heavy standard rail (60kg, 68kg) and MRS series port crane rail. It provides higher lateral load capacity than the M71 and is widely used in warehouses, ports, fabrication facilities and heavy industrial crane runway applications.
What is the difference between the M120 and M71?
Both are two-part welded friction connection clips, but the M120 is larger and suited to heavier rail profiles with higher lateral load requirements. The M71 suits lighter profiles (A45 to A75) with lower lateral loads. If your crane rail is A65 or heavier, or if your application involves higher lateral loads, the M120 is generally the more appropriate choice. Send us your rail profile and application and we'll advise.
What is the difference between the M120 and M165?
Both the M120 and M165 are two-part welded friction connection clips suited to heavy crane rail, but the M165 is the larger clip with higher lateral load capacity. The M165 is specified for the most demanding applications where lateral loads exceed what the M120 can accommodate. For most standard heavy duty overhead crane installations, the M120 is sufficient. The M165 is typically reserved for ports, heavy industry and high-load applications.
What does friction connection mean for the M120?
The M120 transfers lateral loads through clamping force between the clip components and the rail foot. It must be tightened to the prescribed torque specification to achieve the correct lateral resistance. Under-tightening reduces the clip's load capacity, so accurate torquing during installation is essential.
Can the M120 pressure block be replaced?
Yes. The clip top incorporates a modular vulcanized synthetic pressure block that can be replaced when worn without replacing the entire clip top assembly. This reduces the cost of ongoing maintenance over the life of the installation.
How do I know if the M120 is the right clip for my application?
The M120 suits medium to heavy crane rail profiles from A65 upward where a permanent welded connection is appropriate. If your rail is lighter (A45 to A65 with low loads), the M71 may suffice. If your application involves very high lateral loads, the M165 may be more appropriate. Send us your rail profile, crane details and any drawings and we'll advise on the right clip.
