About Standard Rail

What is Standard Rail?

Standard rail refers to the mid to heavy-weight flat-bottom rail profiles used in mainline track, mining operations, industrial floor track and bulk handling systems. In Australia, standard rail profiles follow the AS (Australian Standard) specification, which defines the cross-sectional geometry, head and foot dimensions, and material grades for each weight class.

Standard rail differs from crane rail in both profile shape and application. Where crane rail has a wide unique head geometry for crane wheel contact, standard rail has a narrower head suited to flanged wheels on conventional track systems including locomotive-hauled equipment, stacker reclaimers, transfer cars and heavy industrial floor track.

Head hardened rail is available across selected profiles for applications where higher surface hardness is required to resist wear, common in mining, high-cycle industrial track and bulk handling environments.
