Welded Rail Clip

M71 Two-Part Welded Crane Rail Clip

The M71 is a two-part welded crane rail clip consisting of a replaceable clip top and a lower weldable forged steel base. The two components interlock, slide and tighten together to clamp the rail foot securely to the supporting structure. The base is welded to the beam or sole plate during installation, making it a permanent fixture.

The M71 is designed and performs as a friction connection. This means the clip relies on clamping force to transfer lateral loads, and must be carefully tightened to the prescribed torque to achieve the correct connection capacity. Unlike a bearing-type bolted clip, the friction connection is sensitive to bolt torque; under-tightening reduces lateral resistance.

The clip top incorporates a vulcanized synthetic pressure block for rail retention and load absorption. The modular pressure block can be replaced without replacing the entire clip top assembly. The M71 is typically used on lighter crane rail and standard rail profiles with lower loading conditions.

Rail Profiles the M71 Suits

The M71 is suited to lighter crane rail and standard rail profiles where lower lateral loads are present. For heavier crane rail profiles requiring higher load capacity, the M120 or M165 welded clips are more appropriate. Not sure which welded clip suits your application? Send us your rail profile and we'll advise.

Applications

Where the M71 is Used

The M71 suits permanent installations on lighter crane rail and standard rail profiles where the base can be welded to the supporting structure during installation. As a friction connection it requires accurate torquing and is not easily adjusted after installation, making it better suited to fixed, long-term installations than to systems requiring periodic re-alignment.

Primary Use
Light duty overhead crane runways on smaller A-series crane rail profiles
Rail Type
Crane rail A45 to A75 and standard rail 15kg to 47kg
Installation Type
Permanent installations where the base is welded to the beam or sole plate
Connection Type
Friction connection, must be torqued to the prescribed specification
Maintenance
Pressure block is replaceable without replacing the full clip top assembly

FAQ

M71 Rail Clip: Common Questions

What is the M71 crane rail clip used for?
The M71 is a two-part welded crane rail clip for light duty crane rail and standard rail installations. The weldable base is fixed to the supporting structure during installation and the clip top clamps the rail foot. It is typically used on lighter A-series crane rail profiles (A45 to A75) and standard rail up to 47kg where lower lateral loads are present.
What is a friction connection in a welded rail clip?
A friction connection means the clip transfers lateral loads through clamping force between the clip components and the rail foot, rather than through direct mechanical contact like a bearing-type bolted clip. The friction connection depends on accurate bolt torque. The clip must be tightened to the prescribed torque specification to achieve the correct lateral resistance. Under-tightening reduces the clip's load capacity.
How does the M71 differ from bolted rail clips?
The M71 is a welded clip. The base is permanently welded to the supporting structure during installation, making it a fixed connection that is not easily adjusted after installation. Bolted clips like the CL4-20 use a through-bolt bearing connection that can be adjusted or removed without welding. Welded clips like the M71 suit permanent installations; bolted clips suit installations where future re-alignment or rail replacement may be required.
What is the difference between the M71, M120 and M165?
All three are two-part welded friction connection clips, but they differ in size and load capacity. The M71 suits lighter rail profiles (A45 to A75) with lower lateral loads. The M120 suits medium to heavy crane rail. The M165 is the heaviest in the welded range, suited to demanding applications with high lateral load requirements. The correct clip depends on your rail profile and crane loading. Send us the details and we'll advise.
Can the M71 pressure block be replaced?
Yes. The clip top incorporates a modular vulcanized synthetic pressure block that can be replaced when worn without replacing the entire clip top assembly. This reduces the cost of ongoing maintenance over the life of the installation.
How do I know if the M71 or a bolted clip is right for my application?
The M71 suits permanent installations where the base can be welded and future re-alignment is not anticipated. If your installation requires future adjustability, bolt access or periodic rail replacement, a bolted clip like the CL4-20 is more appropriate. Send us your rail profile, application details and any drawings and we'll advise on the right clip type and size.
